Ethnic village inaugurated at Kohora
One CORRESPONDENT, HOWRAGHAT, Jan 6 - The Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) has initiated a unique step to promote and develop various spots where there is tourist potential.
Apart from the natural panoramic views, the Karbi Anglong district can be described as the heart of Assam. The enchanting hills district with its diverse and rare flora and fauna has remained largely untouched and untapped. The dense forests, waterfalls, rivers and streams are interspersed with flat paddy fields and green hills.
It may be mentioned here that the naturally elegant Karbi Anglong can also be defined as a museum or home of aboriginal ethnic tribes and races like the Karbi, Dimasa, Bodo, Assamese, Tiwa, Garo, Kuki, Hmar, Mantai, Khasi, Adivasi, Rengma and Nepali.

As a part of the unique effort initiated in tourism by the KAAC, a luxurious ethnic village has been established at Kohora, Karbi Anglong near the Kaziranga National Park (KNP). With an aim to showcase the ethnic groups of Karbi Anglong, altogether 12 luxury huts on particular ethnic patterns like Rengma, Karbi, Kuki, Dimasa, Adivasi, Mantai, Khasia, Nepali, Tiwa, Bodo, Assamses and Garo were constructed by the Nilip, Rongbongwe, Lumbajong, Socheng, Bokajan, Chingthong, Langsomepi, Amri, Samelangso, Howraghat and Rongkhang community development blocks respectively under the Swarnjayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY) in the financial year 2007-08.
Its estimated cost is Rs 1.48 crore. The newly-constructed ethnic huts were formally inaugurated on Monday by the KAAC CEM, Joyram Engleng and EMs Sum Ronghang, Hemari Teron, Ratan Engti, Tarendra Brahma, Kuntila Ronghangpi, D Uphing Maslai, Lanki Timung, Jiban Pathak, Bhuban Chandra Terang, Sing Teron and Pradip Rongpi.
Briefing reporters, Hunmili Teronpi, Project Director, said that the ethnic village was established at the initiative of the then Deputy Commissioner of Karbi Anglong, Dr M Angumathu. She further said that the luxurious village was established to showcase the ethnic groups of the district so that tourists can be familiar with the aboriginal people of Assam.
Besides, she revealed that the ethnic village has been designed completely to attract tourists from all sides. Speaking on the maintenance of the government assets, Teronpi said that SHGs or NGOs are likely to be entrusted with the task of looking after the huts of the ethnic village by the KAAC.
